our story

Formerly known as Northumbrian Woodland Burials, Northumberland Woodland Burial & Crematorium is ran and owned by Husband and Wife, Scott and Laura Clarehugh. Founded by Scotts late father, Steve Clarehugh in 2002, we have been supporting families through difficult times for over two decades. Set in 38 acres of semi mature woodland and wildflower meadows, ideal for short walks and enjoyed by many, as a place to find peace and enjoy the natural surroundings. Our site is on the grounds of a former WWII RAF airbase, and was previously home to 100 spitfire aircrafts.

In 2018 we began to develop the idea of opening a chapel and crematorium on our site and were curious to see if this could be done in such a way that didn’t have a negative impact on the environment. After lots of careful planning and research we realised that this could be achieved and we embarked on a four year project to build Northumberland Crematorium. Please read our Environmental Statement for more information on how we protect our environment.

Cremation services are restricted to a maximum of 5 per day, this is to ensure that no one feels rushed at such a difficult time. Northumberland Crematorium is open as a community building, used by local groups and Thirston Parish Council outside of service hours. We look forward to holding seasonal memorial services, as well as wreathe making & natural memorial workshops.

Our aim is to develop the natural beauty of the site and to offer a peaceful place for reflection for loved ones who visit. We don’t hold services on weekends to ensure that loved ones have time and space to visit. We believe that our site is not just a resting place for those no longer with us, but a place for those who are left behind. To take a moment, reflect, walk the dog, bring a flask of tea and watch the aircraft from the nearby airfield.

We are now a proud team of 8, please visit our new reception if you would like to learn more and of us will happily show you around.
